Weldwood

Until 1994 Weldwood of Canada owned 2800 acres, approximately 1/4 of Gabriola Island. The community liked Weldwood owning the land as long as there was not active logging or there were fifteen to twenty years between cuts. But the latest round of logging, from 1989-92, raised considerable concern in the community...

The process involving Weldwood, the Islands Trust, and the whole community, raised hopes and fears to an extreme scale.

A helpful document for understanding this controversy and its impact on island development is the report of the Official Community Plan Review Committee, 1993. This report now exists in .pdf format:Weldwood-OCP-report.pdf The document is a cautionary tale for those who want to re-envision development trajectories on the Islands.
